Burnout at Work: How to Overcome It

by Linda Andrews

“It feels like just yesterday I was getting hired. I was excited. I loved what was going on. Then time pressed on. The novel transitioned to the mundane. I look around… who am I and what am I wearing?” thoughts from a former burnout.

Burnout is sneaky. It creeps in quietly until one day it feels like you’ve lost your energy, your clarity, or even your sense of self. But the good news: it doesn’t have to define you. Burnout can be a signal from your body and mind that it’s time to realign, recharge, and choose a new way forward.

Here are a few simple steps to begin shifting out of burnout:

  • Create ME Time: Wake up a little earlier or carve out space during the day for uninterrupted solitude. Phone tucked away, maybe a walk in nature, or simply sitting with a plant nearby.

  • Breathe: Right now, take a slow inhale deep into your lower abdomen. Sip life in. Exhale and release. Remind yourself, you are alive.

  • Hydrate: It sounds simple, but drinking water helps your system reset and re-energize.

  • Write: Get the swirling thoughts out of your head and onto paper. Journal, scribble, brainstorm, vent. This safe space helps clarity and shifts emerge.

  • Reconnect with Your WHY: Why did you start the work you’re doing? Does it still align with who you are today? Sometimes burnout signals it’s time to refresh your vision or pivot to something new.

Burnout doesn’t have to be the end of your story. It can be the beginning of a more conscious, aligned chapter, one that honors both your wellbeing and your work.
